So how about you? I can see from your avatar that you have a studio to work in as well. Do you take in other bands or is it more of a personal project? Mine started as a personal project and eventually grew into me hooking up with a buddy and combining our gear.

Our studio is called Sour Grounds Recording (Pet Sematary reference). I'm actually in the process of building a website. I'm taking a Web design course in college at the moment, and I'm using the studio for my class project. I should have some finished mixes this week from my band, and I'd love to get a second opinion man. I'll definitely be in touch!

And no June mix yet. I've heard the song and I'm looking forward to it though. Just been working on my band's first song for our new album along with 3 other bands I've been recording. I also noticed I completely fell off the leaderboard for May's mix. That's a bummer too because, as I mentioned before, I was up to number 5 for a very short while. Congrats on hanging on to that #1 spot by the way man! I'm rooting for ya!

Man I like the idea. I think it would be awesome if more people on here could collaborate like that. We actually just got a bunch of new gear in at the studio I work in, and by next week I'll be able to record live drums along with trigger signals for MIDI. The fun part is hooking it all up, running the cables, and troubleshooting all the dumb little mistakes I am sure we will make haha! Man I wish I could let everyone on here hear some of the stuff I have done at the studio. It's much better than the mixes I do at home for the contest here, but I just can't afford the gas to drive to the studio everyday (or else I'd practically live there lol).

Also, just curious if you have ever heard of Reamote by Cockos (the people who make Reaper). I don't know much about it, but if I am not mistaken it can be used for people to link up online and jam together in a single session. Again, I could be wrong, but that would be pretty sweet if I turned out to be right.

I hear you on the critiquing - it's tough to listen to the same song 100+ times - that's why we get the big bucks right? Nice job on June again - Cheers!
  6. Well, I don't know if I killed it (thanks for your confidence!), but it's up - hopefully I accomplished my goal with it.

Oh absolutely man, I'd be happy to listen to anything. And I'll definitely be looking out and looking forward to your post of this month's song. I'm sure you killed it!

Thanks a lot man. I dig your mix skills a lot. If you're down I'd like to have you critique some of my tunes sometime or just talk mixing/making music. Take it easy man

Sorry for the delay. I've just been swamped the last couple weeks at the studio and with schoolwork. It kind of sucks because I was up to like number 5 on the list there for a short minute, but we all know how quickly that list changes! But yeah, I'm a drummer mostly, but I play an assortment of other instruments for fun. I actually just started learning to play the banjo recently, which has also been taking up a lot of my free time. But I'm always willing to offer opinions or suggestions if you ever need a second pair of ears man!

Thanks Jeff, you're right, I'm just a bass player who likes to try to mix a little. Learned to be a tracking engineer back in the late 80s on a Sony MCI 24, Trident 80B console, but ended up moving to Nashville in '92 and didn't do any engineering till a few years ago when I got an iMac and Logic 9 Express. Just do my own demos, mostly all bass stuff ala Chris Squire (one of my early idols). Thanks for the critique of my mix. You're right about the compression. I've never used to compress/limit the 2 mix, always thought that was a no-no, but with these contests it seems that you have to do it. So my first try didn't go as planned. I plan to post a new mix on the bash forum later, so I hope to hear from you on that. And of course I'll be glad to help you with your bass parts. Thanks again.

    Bassically, Michael

Restoring A Meredith Brooks 8 Track Analog Tape Demo From 1985

Sorry for the length of this blog - I do hope someone gets a bit of amusement out of it, if nothing else.

I was recently going through some old boxes that I've had in storage when I came across several reels of 1/2" Ampex 456 that I recorded sessions on as a "youth" back in the mid-80's. Okay, yes, I was young, but that does confirm the fact that I'm an "old fart" for those who have long suspected it. I thought this tale might interest some of you - if
