Started using H4 as a interface with included Cubase and one thing i have not figured out is how to shut off the direct monitoring. When i use the H4 in stand alone mode, which i love the result, you have a choice to monitor the input or not. When i use H4 as DAW interface the input is always direct monitoring and i cannot shut it off. This is annoying if i am using PC guitar modeling as I hear the dry guitar with the model at the same time. Any one ran into this and come up with a solution?? In cubase there is a direct monitor checkbox somewhere in the devices menu, maybe device setup, I don't have cubase one this machine, search help. I don't know what an H4 is but you don't get a software control panel to manage your hardware?

I am aware of the direct Monitor choice in Device Manager of Cubase however with the ZOOM H4 it does not give you the option to select it. Its always grayed out, however the input is always direct monitoring. Not such a big deal when recording voice but if you are using any IN THE BOX modeling as with guitar it does not cut it. thanks anyways. |

Besides, such things have to be accessable from whatever mixer util or on the unit itself, just that the H4 doesn't come with any of these. The "funny" part being that you can switch direct monitoring off in standalone 4-tracker mode but not in audio interface mode. A shame, really, because actually it performs quite well for a USB audio interface (on my Macbook at least) and could be all I ever needed for my mobile recording duties. Fwiw, I already asked the Zoom support about this and got a reply like they'd pass it on to their developers. Now, the main focus of Zoom being no recording interface makers and the H4 mainly being something else but an audio interface, I have very low hopes they'll release an update to the firmware (or a little software mixer util) any day soon. Too bad. Cheers Sascha Btw, in case you're wondering, I just signed up here because I wanted to see the replies to this thread. I'll have a look around the other sections, though. So hello everybody. |

Not sure you'll see many replies.... I own the H4, I have used it as an interface only to prove to myself that it worked (it did). I would have preferred it to be a more straight forward recorder, instead of an all-purpoe device with a million tiny nested menus items. Frankly, I couldn't really follow your meaning in your post. So I have no answer to give.

Direct monitoring simply can't be turned off in audio interface mode, so you always listen to the signal "as it comes in". Which is precisely what you don't want when using software monitoring. You only want the output of your sequencer to appear on your headphone/line outs. Quite a common thing in these days of powerful computers and low latency audio interfaces. Btw, I think the H4 is pretty straight ahead (the menus could be better readable, though). Whenever I switch it on I can instantly press record and it will record. Doesn't get all that much easier, no? Regards Sascha |
