Cool Q's for Zoom mrs 1608

Hey, greetings from Prince George, Canada.
I'm looking for some help with recording with my new Zoom mrs 1608.

Can anyone shed some light on the following:
- I want to choose a different Rhythm Pattern for the bridge section in one of my songs. The manual is not very clear on how to do this.
- I also am trying to record a Rhythm Pattern on to 2 tracks but it only allows for 1 track at a time using the "Bounce" function.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thank you.

Unfortunately, I've never used the Zoom mrs 1608 so I really can't be of any help.

Welcome to the forum. Don't be shy about posting.

It's very easily achieved but to be honest, I couldn't do any better explaining it than the manual. The section you need is called "Creating a Rhythm Song" - page 103 in my manual. Read it. Then read it again while following the instructions (perhaps on a practice song - one that doesn't matter).

I'm assuming you don't actually mean "record a Rhythm Pattern" but actually mean record the drums (using a rhythm pattern) to an actual audio track - right? If not, ignore the rest of what follows:

Bounce can select as many tracks as you like - even including everything coming in "live" at the inputs - all 8 presumably. So I don't know where you found this info but it's wrong. Even the section in manual is called "Combining multiple tracks on one or two tracks (bounce function)" - the word "combining" is a bit of a giveaway right?

The number of tracks you bounce to (either one or two) determines whether the recorded output will be mono/stereo.

What you do, effectively, is record a mixdown or bounce using just the drum (or bass) tracks (I'd advise you to turn off any effects you're using first though). The drum tracks are stereo. Use a stereo pair (eg 15/16 or even 17/18/Master) as the recording destination. Read the mixdown section in the "Quick Tour" at the start of the manual - it's pretty easy. Important: read the "Recording drum/bass sound" section too - page 44.

Hi Fellow 1608 users,
Please be patient as this is my first time talking in this or any forum.

Can anyone give me some pointers in regards to connecting a 1608 to a PC via a Midi interface. I have just purchased a Yamaha UX16 interface but no matter how I try my 1608 and PC will not talk to each other. I'm using Cakewalk 9 as the PC software?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Midge

If you're looking for 2-way communication between the 1608 and the PC, you're going to be disappointed. However...

You can setup the Zoom as a (what I call) master controller but only in the sense that it will issue a "start" sequence. You should be able to set your Cakewalk (or any DAW) to "listen" for that. I use Cubase and it works fine.

Set your Zoom settings like this:

Press the [Rhythm] button then [Utility/Track Edit] button - you should see "Utility" and "Soundsel" on the screen. Now keep pressing one of the cursor keys (left and right arrows) to bring up "MIDI" instead of "Utility". Once you see "MIDI" press the "ENTER" button.

You're now in the MIDI section and should be able to use the cursor keys to select the various MIDI options mentioned in the manual - you select a setting to be changed just the same as you selected MIDI above... when it's on screen, press [ENTER]. You can change the setting value itself using the Jog wheel. When you've changed a setting, press [EXIT] to get back to the MIDI section and continue on to the next setting using the cursor keys as before.

To have Cubase start with Zoom 1608 I use these Zoom settings:

Drum Ch 10
Bass Ch 9
Clock On
SPP On
Command On
Program Change On
MTC 25

Cubase really only needs the MTC setting and does a fine job of sensing when it changes - but 25 seems fine here.

There are a few things I then set up in cubase to tell it to sync to MTC (MIDI Time Code) but they wont make any sense to you/cakewalk.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks Ruzz,

Just what I needed, Midi is relatively new to me as I'm a guitarist, and Midi as I understand it is a Keyboard sort of thing. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Many thanks again
