Seems that I should be able to use it to import files from CD / HDD as well as via USB port...

ah.. ok.

So,

1 - pop the CD into the PC CD Drive
2 - run the Zoom File manager thingy
- it looks a little like windows explorer (that's WINDOWS explorer, not internet explorer) and allows you to do the conversion of zoom dat files to wav.
3 - find the cd and browse the files - I've never done this from a zoom backup/CD so not sure what folders/directories you'll be seeing at this point but, you want the stuff all the *.DAT files.
4 - Make sure you know which tracks are mono and which are stereo.

MONO:
- on the left, select the track number
- along to the right a little, select the take number
- click the Export button and do the obvious (choose filename, where to save it etc)

STEREO
- on the left, select both track numbers
- along to the right a little, select both take numbers
- far right, click on mixer and set the pan controls for each track chosen above, one hard left and the other hard right
- click the Export button and do the obvious

IN BOTH CASES (mono and stereo) MAKE SURE NO OTHER TRACKS/TAKES ARE SELECTED. Basically, you'll get everything you select mixed down to one track (or two, if stereo) . IOW, when you do one export, before you move on to the next, go right back and deselect it - got it?

Keep on going until they're all done.

Hope that helps.

Hey Ruzz,

Really appreciate the answer - but therein lies my problem...
I see the directory structure, and the project I backed up (Proj009) but double clicking on the folder doesn't cause any change in AFM...
I can explore the CD through windows (and see all the .dat files etc) but AFM doesn't seem to recognise it as a project that can be opened...

I'm starting to think that because I have no VTakes (everything recorded across the main tracks) AFM doesn't find the files?

Weird - never seen that happen. Try copying the entire CD to a folder on your HD.

Lemme know...

Yep done that... no change.
Thought maybe the read-only directory was a problem so made sure that the directorys on the PC were writeable...

Also tried copying to a CF Card in a USB Card reader - thought maybe the fact that the USB ports wasn't being used was causing trouble...

Ok, so let's take this approach... on the Zoom, move these to to track1/2 vtakes 1 and 1... redo the copy to CD (if there's a difference between backup and straight copying, choose copy).

Now let's see...

No change...can confirm the VTakes are there now:
e.g. Track 7 now has Track7_0.dat, and Track7_1.dat - presumably the second vtake...
But AFM still doesn't want to know about it.

Looks like I'm going to be recording track by track in realtime through the headphone out! :-)

SOLVED!
Luckily before I had to resort to pulling out my eye-brows...

I wish I could claim credit for this but it came from a post at:
Zoom Gear & Home Recording :: Index
by a chap named Lucas:

"Once the backup files are transferred to the PC, you need to open each project folder and remove the 'backup.ini' file before Audio File Manager will see the project tracks."

I renamed the file mentioned and AFM is my best friend!
