Default New Zoom HD16 User Needs Advice

I just purchased the Zoom HD16. I record in my basement with a variety of mics (AT 2020, 2021, naients, shure sm 57/58s, etc). The basement is fully finished, carpeted, dropped ceiling, etc.

Anyway, my first few recordings with the HD16 with a variety of mics sound like there is a blanket over the sound. Adding the individual track EQ helps, but there is no "punch" or dynamics.

I have been using a Line 6 TonePort UX2 with the same mics through Mackie Tracktion 2 and the recordings or much tighter and dynamic.

Is there something I might be missing? Any ideas?

jack

Are you using the Mic Insert effects when you record? They can make a big difference in the result and bring things to life.

Just learned about them. Can you assign a different Insert algorithm for each input, or track?

How?

I would like to record guitars on one track, voice on another, etc, each using a different insert effect...

Thanks

^ that's what i've been trying to figure out. how do you assign a different effect for each track? what i do know is that i'm using a fairly crappy but usable condenser mic (Samson C01 - came with my zoomhd16) and i've had some decent success in getting a good sound so far. I've recorded vocals with the mic effect inserts "Rock" and "AG-Jumbo" so far and liked the sounds I got with those (even though ag jumbo is technically for recording acoustic guitar, haha). yeah but being able to assign a different effect for multiple tracks would be ideal. (i guess i could dive back into the manual....but.......... sooo.....boring....and....tedious )

on the mrs 16 they had effects with editable characteristics, like 'air' or 'width' .
I found that air was useful. Don't know whether its the mic pres or the convertors
but the Zoom does seem a little 'Blanketed' upon playback.
And a basement will not help you any with the sound. Better off using the SM57 to take the room out of the equation. Try recording in different rooms.

Unhappy Re: New Zoom HD16 User Needs Advice

Hi! im all new at the whole digital mixers.. for awhile i had a tascam 4 track into the mic input on my computer recording onto adobe.. but i decided to step it up.

So i know it takes time to learn all this but im not getting any sound what so ever outta my HD16. All the levels are lighting up but the input section and output section are not working for me. I dont have any ideas i had a friend over who has a yamaha 16 track and he couldnt figure it out either. Ive plugged in various mics use different cables/headphones/speakers and still nothing. I dont know if theres an output selector or not. but the manual doesnt help either!

So if someone Could maybe give me an idea that would be awsome ive been looking at it for like 2 weeks now and not been able to actually start using it!

Thanks!

If it's anything like the Zoom 1608,this might help,if not, ignore it.

You need to make sure that if you want the insert effect to be recorded(as opposed to merely heard when you play)then you should ensure that the status of the insert effect(input source button)displays the word... IN... when pressed.

If it reads TR 4 or TR15/16 etc or simply 4 or 15/16 etc, you're applying it after the fader. This is useful however,if you wish to record clean. You can apply the effect whilst bouncing to another track or V take.In theory you could record 160 tracks per project, each with a different insert effect added after tracking.

Hope this helps.

you have to record the track with the effect and "bounce" it to another track or take of the same track.....there is a thread on here from several months back that goes into detail....this one may help, if not just do a search for it.

Zoom HD16 (trouble bouncing)
