Default H4n AUDIO I/F trouble

Trying to figure out my new H4n.

I have a track, a .wav file, in Cool Edit Pro waveform view. I am ready to record a second track using the H4n as an Audio Interface. Yes, it records, but I cannot hear the original track. I need to hear what I have created -- the existing .wav file -- to play to it. How do I do this? I can only hear the original track through the tiny little H4n speaker which, obviously I don't want blaring while I record my new track. How can I get my studio monitors to work instead? This is why I bought this machine... seems weird to not be able to record overdubs while hearing the original track.

Did I get the wrong machine?

Any guidance appreciated.

Probably. It is not a multitracker.
and zoom does not seem to do anything that we really need to do , at least the way a logical person would try to do it -- based on my experience with it, and reading their manuals.

now i know where the guy went to work who made the VCRs impossible to use so they all blinked 12:00 all the time .

read the fine manual.
The H2 can't do that. Maybe the H4 can, but I doubt it.
How about earphones -- if you could make it play through the speaker that should reroute it so it works. Not sure it would let you record at the same time though.

H2 has no speaker that I can find. Have to use earphones.
And can only do one thing at a time with that model

I found more information on this for the H4n FAQ H4n.

Q: I can record using the USB audio interface function, but there is no sound from the speakers of the computer.

A: When using the H4n as a USB audio interface, the computer sound is output via the H4n. The speakers therefore should be connected not to the computer but to the output of the H4n.

Plug speakers into Line / Headphones.

I used the USB with an external mic in the "1" position and I was able to overdub while hearing the original track (out of crappy computer speakers because my computer studio monitors connect to my computer by USB... I will use a line out of the crappy computer speakers and run them through stereo speakers to use as monitors).
