Yamaha AW2816

I am setting up a home studio currently. I recieved for free a AW 2816 for freeee only used twice. Sweet deal !!! So now I am in need of some advice as to how this unit interacts with different softwares and as a straight stand alone unit. I will also be inheriting a bunch of 4 track mix down stations. Can this unit be used in conjuction effectively with this unit. Thanks to anyone with some advice.

What is a "mix down station"? In all my years of recording, that is a term I've never heard.

I've never used this unit, but I just read a press release for it. Does it interact with software (like on a PC)? At first glance, it doesn't seam so.
