You chose a term that's difficult to explain and to understand. Additive synthesis uses multiple waveforms (usually a bunch of sine waves with frequencies that are calculated in relation to the fundemental) that modulate over time to create complex, evolving waveforms that emulate real instruments and produce specific tonal color. If you have a VSTi host, http://www.kvraudio.com/get/643.html might help you to get a better understanding. Synthesis methods in general are hard to grasp without actually playing with one. Most people start with subtractive synthesis! |

Additive synthesis: sucks, I haven't heard a good additive soft-synth yet. There was one on the market about a year ago (can't remember the name). Very thin sounding synth. Most synths use subtractive synthesis. Have a nice day Peace: bubba |

What is the diffrence bewtween Subtractive Synthesis and Additive thesis? P.s. Richie I didnt know the word was that hard to explain.Sorry Richie. My bad....lol...but at least I know that this word has something to do with wave forms or sine forms that moderlate and produce tonal color?Does tonal color means that it sound better??????Im learning.thanks fellaz!!!!!! Bubba said that additive synthresis isn't shyt....lol..... DO additive synthesis has something to do with synths? Im think all ths Additive synthesis goes on inside the computer?Right? I hope im not being annoying R.R.com. Im just real about making music and cant wait until I get the right Home recording gear.I guess U can say that Im playing catch up but not rushing cause Ill never catch up on what I could have known a longtime ago.But it all good its never to late in my opinion if U got talent then u got it,Straight up!!!!

Hi Mr. B. Killa: Additive synthesis does have something to do with synthesizers. It is a way that they make sound (a bad way). I don't know of anybody that has made a synthesizer that sounds good that uses additive synthesis. Just about all of them use subtractive synthesis. Reason even has a synthesizer called the Subtractor. So there. Peace: bubba Last edited by bubba; 04-24-2007 at 11:11 PM. |

There is A LOT to learn (as you slowly chipping at here on the forum) to this whole recording thing. I stash this away in the (don't give a damn) folder in my brain. When I'm looking for the right sound for a given piece of noise, I just push buttons. If it sounds good, I use it. If it doesn't I don't use it. Now when I'm getting electric guitar sounds or something I need to understand the technology behind it. However, I find with my synth work that just cycling through the presets is often good enough. So this is just a recording term right?Thats all! Just and option right? I know good music too when i hear it brandon. So u saying that I should listen to the mixes and whatever sound good go wit it and the bad shyt ditch it?right? But a least i know a little something about additive synthesis but not too much.Maybe it will come up again in the future.Maybe?...lol thanks brando again!!!Nice advice!

It's not a recording term, its a synthesis generation method. The difference between subtractive synthesis and additive synthesis is the way that they create the sounds they create. Subtractive, as its name suggests, takes a wave form and uses filters to take elements of sound away. This leads to a new wave form that sounds different. Additive synthesis takes a wave form and adds other wave forms to create its sound.
