Have only what you need on your computer - that will help it to run with the best performance. If you download crap from the internet, you've probably got spyware at best and viruses at worst. Both can be a drain on your system. Downloading porn or pictures of kittens might be fun, but it creates a crap load of files that are spattered all over your hard drive. So, when your computer is dumping your audio files it has to search around for space to put those files. This searching is a drain on your computer. Sequencers (both audio only and video) are among the hardest working applications out there for computers. Keeping your computer clean will help them to do their job the best way possible. |

It's not just the "files" that are the problem, necessarily. I mean, you could theoretically have a folder with 20GB on porn (or kittens ) on your desktop and it would hurt anything (as long as still had plenty of space on the drive and had run disk defragmenter). The problem comes when little spybots, unnecessary programs, and such start to use up your computer's CPU power. It all boils down to how much performance you need. Richiebee uses internet on his recording computer, if memory serves me. (It's certainly much simpler that way sometimes). I refuse to even put the networking card in my recording rig. I may become more lax in time as I'm planning some tutorials. So, you could probably get away with some internet stuff, but I also have a feeling that Richiebee is only using it when necessary. In the end, it comes down to how much performance you need. My computer isn't exactly top of the line, so I keep everything as streamlined as possible. Others have more power and can get away with a few extra features (like internet) that may have a possible negative effect on peformance. Brandon |

yeah, you're right brandon. I don't have email set up on it and I don't do much surfing. I have Napster for inspiration on stylistic composition and influence on music in general, plus I go to three or four forums and check my e-mail using internet explorer and a web page interface. I have Quick Time installed... I wish I didn't, but I've found it to be the easiest way to use Quick Time video files in cubase for sync'ing to picture. That's about it... It's just audio related software other than that. |

HI guys, this is my first post so be kind OK. I'm a 40 ish singer songwriter guitarist and Ive played most styles of music but these days my thing is country, which is an underground genre in the part of Australia I live in (oh well). I've do live sound occasionally and have done for years but i prefer to gig with my band. I started recording 20 plus years ago with a fostex X15 using stomp boxes for vocal effects and bouncing heaps of times to get more tracks ( good learning curve tho) I graduated to computer recording about 2001 and I produced a 6 track ep here at home in 04 using Logic studio isis which had 8 in and 4 out. it was an onboard sound card and the quality wasn't great but it sounds OK and gets air play on a couple of local stations and sells at gigs. These days I use an mbox 1 which sounds good but I get frustrated with the lack of expandability. I shouldn't complain to much as the set up was payment for a favour! Anyway back to the thread! I use my computer for everything, Internet, business and study (I've gone bac to Uni. Mid Life Crisis?) and I was wondering what the best way is to ensure my system is running the most efficiently. I have a separate HD installed where I keep all; my audio files and I defrag reasonably regularly. Love the forum its the best thing I've found on the net!!! |

Welcome higg! This is the best site on the web today.R.R,com we all on fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!make yo self at home and welcome to the r.rcom family. So we can all agree that having just audio files on yo system you can expect a better more reliable performance? unless u defrag?or run a temp disk clean up everyday ? right? This isnt a bad idea for a die hard recording person like me.I think that being dedicated to what u do IS SO UNIQUE. I want do it now but later on I will dedicate my p/c just for music. THANK U GUYS BRANDO & RICHIEBEE!!! GREAT JOB!!

B.K., I researched this topic for a long, long time and finally became convinced to NOT have internet connectivity on my dedicated music computer. My music computer was just built by a friend, who will be coming over to help me set up the whole rig next week. I told him to forget about any internet connection or networking. I wanted a completely CLEAN music computer so I don't have to worry EVER about worms, viruses, spyware, CPU drainage, etc. It has two hard drives--80 GB for the OS and software programs, and 120 GB for audio/MIDI files. I can get MIDI files, updates, etc. from my "regular" computer, security-check 'em, burn 'em on to disc, then load 'em on to my music machine. |
