Well, if you are looking to pick up things, I recommend a fork lift or a cleaning lady.

In all seriousness, I know what youare saying. For me, the vocal effect thing is the hardest thing to get right. For many songs, the dry vocal isn't quite right, unfortunately. (I love it when it is, though). I still struggle with this today. I spent 3 hours on the effects of a bridge vocal the other day and never ended up finding anything I liked. (There is a point where you should move on and refresh your ears).

I was watching a DVD of a new rock / metal band in the studio about a week ago. The singer was using a Shure SM7 in the control room and the vocals sounded like a zillion bucks. I've used my SM 7 and it NEVER sounded like that. They cut from the dry mix while tracking to the final mix. The dry, tracking mix was about what I'm used to. The final mix was AMAZING!!

You basically have reverbs (both very short and long), delays (both very short and long), chorus, slight pitch shift up, slight pitch shift down, and chorus. It's not uncommon for me to use most of these at one time. There are an infinite combinations of levels and settings and I wish I could give you more advice.

I left out compression. I always smash the shit out of vocals with a compressor or two. I also automate the vocals quite a bit to even out various phrases, bring out lyrics as needed, etc.

As for plugins, the big site is http://www.kvraudio.com/ I personally find that they have way too many plugins and it can get overwhelming, but it's a start. They have a HUGE list of free plugins.

I would recommend at least less ti mid on threshold and put the compression to 3:5:1 and output that is suitable software input. release and attack varies.

Don't put too much reverb and during recoding try to record the vocals without reverb effect. To prevent screwing your recording.
