hey,
im just gettin into home recording and am being given a new computer from work.. Its got all the new bells n wistles with 2 gig ram i figure i should be able to do my recordings on it as well. However it's got Windows Vista and I've heard that there arn't drivers for Vista for a lot of gear. Does anyone know a way around this? Or what gear works with Vista? I asked at my local shop but the kid working seemed more confused than i did.. |

The problem with vista is it is brand new.
As an IT guy i do NOT recomend vista untill Microsoft relase the first service pack for it. Since it is new alot of hardware manufacturers are still pumping out drivers. This usually means older hardware gets dropped and no drivers are made, others are full of bugs in the first release. I cant say which hardware is out as it depends which hardware you have. if you give a list of hardware i can try and find out for you. Audio hardware tends to be touchy with new systems. Alot do not support Linux, most have accapted Macs, however alot of studio's work in the "aint broke dont fix" idea. so they wont be in any rush for vista. Overall since it comes with your PC, just give it a try. you can always go to XP easily ![]() |

By now, most manufacturers are going to have drivers out even if they are not perfected yet. Vista isn't BRAND new. The manufacturers have had some time.
So with that said, I'd focus on figuring out what gear you really need. Use the home recording soundcard wizard in my signature and limit your choice of sound cards down to a handful or so. From there, do some research to see how each is working with Vista. If that fails, I'd setup a dual boot system with XP and be done with it. Brandon
