Talking Vista/Firebox

Hey, all! I'm new here and have a problem that is making me pull my hair out!

I have a Presonus Firebox that I was using on my XP laptop with no problem. I just bought a dedicated Desktop (Dell Studio 540) that uses Vista, and now I'm not getting any audio.

I called Presonus tech support and the guy walked me through setting up the box using Cubase LE, only to tell me, "hmm, it should be working"

I've come to the conclusion that it's a Vista problem.

I've downloaded the Vista driver also.

When I click on the speaker icon and open up the playback settings, I see all of my presonus information - Presonus Firebox Out Main 1/2, and under that it says, "working". Also listed under "working" is Line out, out 3/4, S/pdif out L/R. I've selected each of these (one at a time) as the default device for playback with no luck.

In the "Recording" tab I have 3 Presonus related icons: Firebox mic/instrument 1/2 (where I have my mic plugged in), Line in 3/4, and S/pdif in L/R.

When I click to select any of these, I get an option to "test" them, and when I do, I see a VU fluctuating (as if there is sound), but don't hear anything.

When I do this with the regular computer speakers, I hear the test.

Also, I have since connected the Firebox to my XP laptop again, and it's working fine...I don't have to adjust any settings at all.

I called Dell for support and they say that I have to call BestBuy since that's where I bought the computer, and when I call BestBuy, they say, "Give us $150 and we'll be right out with the GeekSquad to help you out!" Never mind that I just bought the thing...I guess I expected at least SOME free help.

Speaking of free help...Help!

Is it Cubase LE or LE4? LE will not work in Vista, it's as simple as that.

The next four people to answer you are going to say Vista sucks...get ready.

If it looks like shit, tastes like shit, feels like shit and smells like shit then chances are good that it IS shit.

I believe that it's LE -1, however, I've tried Cakewalk Sonor Producers 7 demo, and Reaper and I still get the same results. This is what leads me to believe that it's Vista and not the DAW.

There must be some way to make this thing work besides replacing Vista.

At this point I don't even really know where to look for an answer if you guys don't know. I've posted this on the only other recording site that I could find and have gotten no answers.

Vista has sucked for a few people but not all... Lol I guess its like how I feel about PRE*****.

I have a vista setup and I have had zero issues... but then Im not using Cubase LE...

Now I know some might think I pick on PRE***** ( I Do!) but I see that when you go to XP it works...

Are you using a firewire PCMIA Card?

Is it the Same Card you use on both Laptops?

Try ASIO4ALL on the vista machine... It could/might be a driver issue... just go thru all the bases... PRE***** Drivers SUCK!!!

The way I see it is you have two choices here. You can keep trying to get everything working under Vista. You can post on forums, try different drivers, dual boot, use a Virtual Machine, get frustrated, waste time, cry, add years to your life and maybe get something working.
Or you could just switch to XP.

In your own words:

You may be right about just switching...I just unplugged the regular computer speakers and restarted the computer, and all of a sudden my studio speakers were working and I was able to record in Cakewalk. But then I switched to Cubase LE just to see if it would work, and it didn't. To make matters worse, I then went back to Cakewalk and it didn't work again either.

Would it make any difference if I bought a new sound card - one that isn't integrated?

What all is required to switch to XP? I'm about to see what Best Buy's policy is on returning computers...if their tech support is any indication, I'm not opptimistic.

You have a Soundcard, the Firebox with Vista drivers. That's fine.
Read this one more time...slowly:

Is it Cubase LE or LE4? LE will not work in Vista, it's as simple as that.

Ask Presonus for a copy of LE4.
