Default three hundred gig hard drive....

man i wish i did this months ago!

got a Seagate firewire hard drive for a good price here in town.... now all my audio files are on the other hard drive from the one i am recording on... makes the computer run smoother for sure!

not just when i am recording either

got about 20 GB of .wav files off the main drive!

next up? MORE RAM!

They had a sale two weeks ago on 300 GB drives for $69 at Tigerdirect. I didn't find out about it until they had run out.

The extra drive helps a ton. The RAM will too. I just installed 2 GB of RAM in my recording rig the other day. I wasn't a moment too soon. The very next day I was using 1.5 GB of samples!! Ouch!

works for me so far!

this sucker cost me a pretty penny really... but i found that it was only really going to save me about $20 to buy a "nice" drive and "the best case" for the firewire deal...

so i spent the extra money on it and saved me the time of putting the whole works together...

i understand this thing is on digidesigns list of working pro tools rigs should i decide to take that road here soon....

this machine will take up to 2 gigs of RAM and so that will happen sometime soon.... right now she chugs along fine on 512mb with my work....

RAM was NEVER an issue until I jumped on this sample band wagon. I'm using DFH Superior for my drums. When I load up a kit in "weuss mode" I'm still using 400 MB or RAM instantly (on top of what Cubase SX3 is already using). I fired the drums up in "badass mode" and it used something like 3,600 MB instantly. Ouch!!

On top of that I'm toying with bass samples so there is another 200MB.

I ordered Kontakt 2 last night so when I start adding more instruments with the sampler, I'm going to be really screwed!

It's quite clear I'll have to commit to the programming of the drums and render them down to .wav files before I can get serious with my sampler. Luckily, Cubase SX3 has the "freeze" function which allows you to push a button and it will essentially render that track down (saving possibly GB's or RAM).

It's a good idea not only because of the RAM issue but the sound of the drums changes when all bleeds are enabled... you can always change something later and rebounce if needed... I like to bounce, do a "pre-mix" on the drums and then track/re-track instruments... It does affect how I mic other instruments a bit...

Ableton Live has that freeze feature also to save RAM.......I guess I never really got it until now......(light bulb comes on)
