What do you have to work with? A test tone CD and level meter would be good.

Wow! I did this two years ago already. I found a free program online that allowed me to import a range of test tones from 40Hz on up to somewhere around 20khz. It would go up a hertz every 10 seconds and my meter (which I bought for $40 at Radio Shack) read the level. I annotated each measurement on a graph. You can get a good idea where the nodes are that may be causing cancellation or buildup. I did this in about 9 different spots in my control room.... BEFORE and AFTER Bass Traps. You can "read" a noticeable difference. (wish I could remember the name of the program or zip file).

There's a free program called Room EQ Wizard, on the Home Theatre Shack forum. It will measure your room and give you a graph. You will need an SPL meter and measurement microphone. Alternately you can just use the signal generator in your DAW and walk around the room and listen to weird spots. You DO NOT want to EQ the output of the soundcard. Period. No arguing. |
