Default Sound Setup

hi i need help with my sound setup.
when recording i have all mics/guitars etc going directly into my soundcard and then into my laptop via firewire and onto my sequencer. my first question is where do i output the sound from what im recording to hear it on my speakers and headphones? is it the headphone jack on the laptop or on the soundcard?sry if this seems incredibly basic.
my second question is when using a USB midi controller, where do i connect this? the soundcard seems like the obvious place but there is no USB connection on it so i am left with the USB port on my laptop(wouldn't this be poor latency-wise?)
the controller i have is the m-audio x session pro btw. and axiom 49 but i put that thru the soundcard with midi so its not a problem.
basically if someone cud draw out a setup to explain that would help me out a lot.thanks for reading

Use either the soundcard headphone output (to monitor with headphones) or connect your powered monitors to the main outs (1, 2).

What type of interface (soundcard) are you using ?

You should be able to use any usb port on your computer to connect the midi controller.

Most people send the sound to the same device used for input. You can choose depending how well it works with your drivers. Many disable the internal soundcard so it does not conflict.

The USB MIDI(or any MIDI)does not transmit audio, so it does not need the sound part of the soundcard and the USB port should work fine.
