Here's a short article I wrote entitled <a href="http://www.recordingreview.com/begin...record.php">So You Want To Record Your Band</a> which gets into detail on everything you need to record your band. The focus of this article is "budget recording" ? because it's my belief that if you are recording yourself, then you probably don't have enough money to do it properly. No major label band records themselves that I'm aware of when it comes to the real deal album.
