Default A Serious Dilemma , Need Some answers about recording

yo, whats up , im new here and just getting my thoughts about my home studio. i want to know do i need headphones for the vocals so they can hear themselves, if i do, what do i hook them up to?

Does the Beat playin on the monitors affect the vocal recording?

Your help is appreciated

You don't HAVE to use headphones, but it's a fairly common practice. I'd say I use headphone 80% of the time. In some recordings, I've preferred to just crank up the monitors.

Well, what do you have now?

When I'm tracking vocals, I run signal out of my audio interface / sound card and into an old mixer. This has an extension cable that goes to the singer. I also have a headphone amp that I've used in the past as well.

You need an audio interface. It will perform the tasks of a mixer, though probably with less channels simultaneously. Two channel interfaces are cheap and will be fine if you're just recording one or two instruments (or vocals) at any one time. A small handful of audio interfaces have no facility to attach headphones, but most do have this facility.
Although this might be a little more expensive than buying a mixer and connecting to your computer's built in sound card, the improved quality and work flow make it almost compulsory!
