Default RME Fireface 800 Question

Has anyone here ever used this soundcard? I am newbie and am putting a little something together at home. From what I have read it seems as though this is a good piece of equipment, but I don't know anyone who has used it. The other unit I am looking at is the Digi 002 control surface factory. Any comments on either one would be appreciated.

I've never used either, but know people who have used both. They are both high quality, reputable brands. Both of these products are very successful.

Personally, I'm sticking with the M-audio stuff. The sound will be practically identical between all these home recording sound cards and there is a lot more money to be spent on acoustics, microphones, better clients, etc (the things that really matter on a recording).

Buying Pro Tools or RME is kind of like buying a Mercedes for $50k when a Hyundai has all the same features, the same warrantee, etc. I'll go with the Hyundai just so I can put a pool in the back yard vs getting a Mercedes and nothing.

That rest is your call, though.

The Digi 002 is designed for ProTools. Don't get it unless you want to go the money pit route of ProTools.

RME stuff is good. But pretty expensive. I don't know anyone who uses it and I think that's partly because for what it is, it's just too expensive.

I'm not sure I totally agree with Brandon's analogy, but I too like M-Audio stuff. I think its extremely good value. I also think that Tascam stuff (even though their support sucks) is good, especially when made/designed by Frontier. I think you'll find a Tascam equivalent of the 002 that retails for much less. Of course it doesn't come with a really great sequencer (I think you get Cubase LE), and the Digi one comes with a pretty good sequencer at least (ProTools LE), but if it was me, I'd go with Tascam and a good sequencer rather than the ProTools/002 route.
