Default Recording start-up

Hey,

Alright so Im trying to get a simple good quality home recording setup to start recording guitar/bass/vocal tracks. I have a newer apple desktop. I will give you the list (which is pretty short) of what I have and then what Im thinking about getting.

Marshall dsl100 (deluxe voodoo mod) 1960a cab, peavey 2-12 cab
mix of boss effects
Gibson les paul standard
schecter c-1 classic
fender strat american standard
shure sm-57.

Okay thats what I got now. I was looking at audio interfaces and read around that the apogee duet is pretty good quality. So I was thinking about using that as my interface. Then I was going to grab a pair of m-audio studio pro 3 monitors, I already have garageband, so I was going to use that for a while until I become pretty efficient then upgrade from there.
Alright gentlemen school me.
Thanks in advance.

well, since you are just starting out, basically, I'll ask you whereabouts your budget is for recording interfaces. $100 is standard, but if you can afford more or less than that we can work with that too.

I would recommend a Duo Pro Preamp, they record great. also, despite the crowd it draws, Garageband works well as a recording program. it's what I use, and I am satisfied by the vast majority of my recordings.

the Duet is very nice from what I've read on Apple's Forums. I use a G5 20" Imac and I finally am using LOGIC STUDIO 8. Garageband works great but I really wanted GUITAR AMP PRO and MAINSTAGE so I opted for Logic Studio - an awesome program! I use a simple ART TUBE PRE for my DI and it works very well with my LP... The Imac seems to have a small preamp built-in as I really never needed a DI to begin with - had 2 including a FastTrack but found it sounded FAT and FULL without it. The ART TUBE gives me a bit of tube ****th and I can actually overdrive the 12AX7 a bit when I want.

The Apogee is high end. I would not recommend putting that much cash into a 2 channel audio interface unless you have about $20k for other stuff. Seriously. I'd go with something less expensive like this if you only need 2 channels. Check out my home recording soundcard wizard. It'll help you a ton.

Anytime you try to bust your ass at something there is always some socialist jerk who tries to crush your dreams. It's one negative asshole with issues with entitlement after another. It's a good thing I don't have control of the big red button, because I'd blow the whole damn thing (Earth) right now.

This is a relatively new forum. It's still has a LONG way to go before it's a full blown active forum. I didn't catch recording on the ground floor and I started with extreme adversity because I thought I could do better. Because the forum is still in it's infancy, I have to answer nearly every thread myself. It's common for me to put 40 hours per week into this forum even though it doesn't make enough to pay my bills. This in addition to more conventional "real jobs".

Because of an extremely high workload for both recording and web consulting I wasn't able to get to this forum for a few days. So forgive me that I didn't put the breaks on Planet Earth so that I could redirect it to revolve around you.

I lose so much sleep working on this forum simply because I know there are people who need help I don't want them to wait. However, it's a given that sometimes threads get overlooked out of human error or elsewhere. The normal protocal is to use the old BUMP technique.

There is absolutely no reason to make me feel like a piece of shit. I hope you feel better about your life.

Brandon

For one i dont expect the site owner to ever comment back on my threads unless it really spikes his interest due to the fact that I know how much work it is to maintain a site. Its the countless others on the site that know the answers but are too lazy or feel that my question is way too elementary for them to answer. One of the first things I did was read all your tutorials on recording prior to asking any questions. I then searched the archives for my question and found no solid leads. If you feel that the community you have on this site is a direct reflection upon your character then I guess Im sorry for making you feel like a piece of shit. The comment was directed for the 100 some lurkers with no input.

Okay, I'm called down. I apologize for being an asshole. I've been posting since for 10.5 hours straight.

With that said, I don't think the members at Recording Review are lazy in any way. People post here because they want to post here. I wish I had the means to give away more stuff in contests to get more people posting more of the time. It's always a guessing game trying to make something out of nothing.

Let's get back on topic.

Did you figure out what audio interface you are going to get?

Brandon
