Default Recording Drums on Seperate Tracks

So at the moment, im recording my drums by putting the into the mixer then using the mixers direct out to go to the interface (tascam us144) then to the laptop

But it all comes as one track

Is there any ways of gettin each part on a separate track?
(e.g. bass drum - track 1, snare - track 2 etc)

Thanks
Dan

With the US144 I believe the only output you have is a stereo track. The US144 with USB cannot do direct outs with your DAW.

If you are using Cubase you have to use mono recording tracks, and assign them correctly. VST connections, (or input setup on old LE version) will allow you to assign stereo left as 1 track, and stereo right as the other individual track.

But you are stuck with that being the max with 2-channel interfaces.

You need an interface other than US144 to take care of that.

Ok had a look on that
still pretty clueless though

basically i'll need 8 seperate tracks to record simultaneously
(snare,bass,3 or 4 toms, 2 overheads)

probably want firewire
and needs to support mac

i really dont understand the interface world!
and what are the inputs on the front of alot of them, because their not XLR?

Lots of them are TRS / XLR combo connectors. Inputs is 8 inputs so... you want an interface with at least 8 inputs. No mystery there. Firewire is very common and nearly everything works with MAC.

You should get lots of choices if you plug that data into the wizard. Did you actually want someone to pick you out an interface?
