Default Questions about products I should buy for guitar recording

Hello, I'm brand new here and I just had a few questions about guitar recording. I like to mix music digitally using Acid 6.0 and Reason 3.0, but recently ive decided I wanted to add some of my guitar playing to my music. I am having trouble figuring out what i want to buy to get the right sound. My friend is using a line 6 Tone Port, and records directly into his program Magix music maker. Ive checked out a few products including the tone port, and M-Audio's Fast Track Pro, but im having trouble figuring out what I really need. Im looking for something around $300-$400 that has at least 2 guitar inputs and a mic input, what do y'all suggest? thanks.

-Paul

Brandon wrote a nice article for people with exactly your problem. Thats the cool thing about this site, not only do you have the awesome informative forum, but you've got butt loads of articles aimed at engineers and producers at all different levels. And the site is always expanding. I can't imagine the kinds of free recourses that will be available a year-five years from now.

Heres the link:

Hope that helps,

Ben

Okay, are you thinking acoustic guitar, electric guitar, or both? Are there any possibilities that you'll be adding vocals, harpsicord (spelling), or any other instruments that require microphones.

By the way, are you intending to use a mic(s) to record your guitar? To me, recommending direct guitar recording is about like recommending that your children experiment with Speed. In other words, it's not recommended. Go for the real thing! You'll be glad you did!

Okay, so maybe you want to try direct guitar. Try it. It did work for Def Leopard. I'm curious why you need 2 guitar inputs. You may have a hard time finding this feature.

I highly recommend you check out the article that Dogpit posted already. The article is not going to 100% solve your problems, but it will certainly arm you with some info to ask more specific questions.

Ask away. We'll be here!
Brandon

btw, Thanks for the literary handjob, Dogpit!. I can always use one of those every once in a while.
