please help workstation or software?????

A few questions, Im new to the game completely so bare with me please, I was looking at investing in a Roland recorder, the vs-2480 to be exact, can I also use a computer software recorder also or does the process go software alone or digital workstation alone or both at the same time? Ive been at pretty layed out home studios but the producers really didn't want to give out to much info about his set up, but he had both computer and workstation i'm confused please help clearify

just starting out you dont need both. they both perform the same general functions, so that would be redundant and a waste of money. software based is cheaper, more flexible, and much more powerful. theres several threads in here about the same topic.
