Default Newbie monitor question

Please don't laugh too much as this question. I might actually win "stupid question of the week (or year!).

Anyway, I just got a PreSonus FP10 to set the scene. My question is in regards to setting up a monitor so I can play back my recorded sounds. Is it possible to take the output from the Presonus and run it to a regular stereo receiver audio in?

I know I could buy a powered speaker set, but I've already spent too much this year, and the wife might just beat me over the head with the Presonus FP10!

Yes, it's possible, but you may have a hard time getting a flat response.
Most Stereo speakers and home Hi-Fi setups color the sound, but you can certainly do it !...Good luck !

That's definitely good to hear. I can switch between headphones, and playing on stereo if I want to have someone listen.

If the sound is too bad, the I can always get the monitors also. However at this point, I'm just trying to get my act together and will work on the fine pts later!

he he!

Naw, she's a great person, and if I can get this all figured out in a timely manner, I think she'll be a fan of home recording.

Besides, being a good wife, it's her duty to track all these "boy toys".

BOO! BOO! BOO!

I thought I was going to get a REALLY stupid question. I was actually excited. It was all built up to be funny and then NOTHING. It's a real question. A good question. BORING!

The 1/4" out of your FP10 can be converted to 1/4" outs with RCA adapters. I do this sort of thing all the time if I need to record sound off of a VCR or something.

Typically, home stereos don't provide the most accurate studio monitoring environment, but if you wife cuts your weiner off, what difference does it make?

Thanks Brandondrury!

I actually did try the 1/4 TRS jack to 1/4 RCA jack from Prosonus FP10 to stereo. Long story short is that despite multiple different configurations, and many different attempts at Cubase LE 4 output bus configs, I can't get any sound out of my stereo receiver.

I will follow up with some additional information over the weekend, but I'm not at my "studio".

Actually, I sent a detailed reply late last night, but for some reason, it didn't get sent even though I clicked "submit reply". I'm not having much luck right now with technology!

Also, regarding my newbie question not being that "stupid". All I can say is "you ain't seen nothing yet"!

Try this first.
Soundcard Troubleshooting 101

You need to find out if the problem is a Cubase LE4 configuration issue, your computer, your audio interface, or even your receiver.

Problem solved...for the most part.

After a review of Soundcard Troubleshooting 101, a couple of things stood out. On thing that I checked was which soundcard the computer was defaulting. It was still referencing the soundcard in the laptop, whose name I didn't recognize (sigma tel audio), so I assumed it was part of the Presonus software. Wrong.

So...my advice to other newbies: Figure out the name of the soundcard that came with your computer.

I changed the default soundcard to Presonus output, and started getting sound exported out of Cubase LE, through the Presonus interface, and to my stereo receiver.

Only thing not going out it MIDI. Still getting that via the computer speakers. I'll read through the forums to chx this out.

Oh, and I finally did my first overdubbing project... a brief instrumental song with acoustic, electric drums, and a shaker (made from rice in a baby bottle). Fairly rough...but learned a lot!

You can't send MIDI to speakers because MIDI isn't sound. It sounds to me like you are sending your MIDI to the default Windows Wavetable synth thingy, but that isn't routed within Cubase and is going to whatever is defined in Control Panels as the default playback device.

Check out MIDI Troubleshooting 101
