thanks baron, before i get to following your directions...

i have my m audio plugged into the firewire port, and the microphone run right into that just to see if it works, i use adobe to record but i installed their pro tools demo just to see if adobe was the problem, when i opened up pro tools it says that it cannot find the maudio an that it is not plugged in, also i should be getting bus power on my firewire with the 6 pin but im not...

any idea?

i wanted to use the compressor on the vocals i record, it has a lot more options than my mixer

basically i was recording with the mixer, into the computer, but i bought the compressor to help my quality, welll thats what i thougt it would do

i figured out some information about the m audio firewire that might be helpful to anyone

i purchased a IEEE Card Bus Adapter aka firewire port from best buy

the mic attached wasnt picking up anything

i called m audio and basically found out that its because my the firewire port is VIA instead of Texas Instruments, i guess this affects it greatly.

i was using the pro tools demo they gave me and it wouldnt start because of this, and my adobe audition picks up nothing.

now i need to find a new firewire port, this sucks

Dude...I feel your pain

I have been there too many times, but that is the nature of the beast.

The thing that really peaves me is when the ports don't run anywhere near the claimed specifications.

I always encourage newbies to stick with plugin compressors. In fact, I've been doing this for 6 years and still don't own a hardware compressor. By far, compression is not the weakest link in my chain.

Does your audio interface have some sort of send/return in it? If it does not, you won't be able to even use the compressor without an external preamp. You'd connect it like this:
Mic > External Preamp > Compressor > Audio Interface

i dunno about the send/return, i plugged everything in on another laptop and the compressor seemed to work, i could adjust gain and attack and release and see effect in the vocals

richie why should i get rid of the compressor and mixer?
