Question Need Major Help Getting A Better Drum Recording

I have the mbox 2 with pro tools and i wanted to record my drummer. What i did was took some sm57s and some drum mics that we found at a show (they dont look like a normal mic, they were really small). We place one at the bass, one at the snare, one at the toms, and one at the highhat, he had an over head mic but it just sounded too messy.

I put each mic into a mixer and then from the mixer i pluged it into my mbox. Now here comes the problem. When i listened to, first of all the tone was pretty bad. Secondly and most importantly everysingle mic would pick up the snare. When i listened to the bass mic on pro tools with my head phones i could kinda hear bass but mostly all snare. What can i do to make the bass mic just pick up bass and the snare mic pick up just snare and so on.

thanks alot

there will always be bleed if you're recording an acoustic kit...

you can always EQ out unwanted frequencies so that they're relatively un-noticeable. try that out!

Yep, there is always bleed. But it sounds like you have more than normal on your kick. I do not get a whole lot of snare bleed in my kick mic. This may be because I have a mic specifically designed for a kick drum (Audix D6). Maybe it focuses on the low end and doesn't pick up as much of the higher frequency snare sound.

I also put my kick mic inside the bass drum so it has somewhat of a physical barrier from the snare. I always have EQ'ed my kick sound to filter out the high frequencies and the snare bleed is barely noticeable.

Try and borrow a good kick mic (Audix D6 or Shure Beta) and try it exactly the way you have been and see what the difference is.
