Default Need Help With Unexplained Static

Actually, it's my girlfriend's mix but she is currently without internet. She has a four track mixer that uses zip disks that she records to and then she transfers it over to her laptop and mixes it in audacity. Nothing too fancy, but she's been doing this for a while and gets pretty good results. The problem, which has never happened to her before, is that certain tracks sound fine when you listen to them on the computer but static shows up when they are burnt to cd. We've tried burning the tracks from different computers but it's still there so we think it's something in the file. It's odd though, because I swear you can't hear the static if you play it on the pc. I'd be very appreciative if anyone has any thoughts or ideas.

Here's a link where you can download the .wav file:

Thank you for any help/input you might have to offer.

I hear a little distortion at 0:56. Is that what you are talking about?

That could be caused by clipping at any stage in the chain.

Is the static in the original 4-track?

Not in the mood for downloading a wav, but check the bit depth of the version on your computer. Maybe its at 24 bit. If its not downconverted to 16 bit then when it gets burned to CD the top 8 bits will simply get chopped off.

Don't know if it helps you, but certainly this could be the cause of it sounding fine on the computer then like crap on the CD. The other thing to check for is whether whatever burning software you're using, that it isn't getting normalized. I've never known nero to get that right.

R.

Try a different program to burn the CD.
