Question need advise on software/hardware

I have a small amount of experience recording with a Korg D888. It is very simple, but doesn't have much flexability. I am praticularly having problems getting the bass guitar to come out. I seems to get lost in the mix and sounds somewhat muddy.
Any ideas?
I am also thinking about going to some other product that has more flexability. I see a lot of the MBOX with Pro Tools on e-bay. That seems to be relatively inexpensive. But I don't know if it's any good for a newbie. I am also in the dark about what else I might have to buy to go along with it.
So, I guess what I'm really asking for is suggestions on an inexpensive way to get started. I don't want to spend mountains of money cause I don't have it. I also want something that is easy to learn and relatively simple. I don't have a huge knowledge base to work from either.
I guess another alternative would be to take the .wav files from the Korg and manipulate them with some other software. Is there anything like that out there? Can I get something simple and inexpensive?
HELP?
BTW> I'm really glad that newbies are protected on this forum. Otherwise I would probably be in for a lot of laughing.
Thanks!

Pro Tools is DEFINITELY not the most inexpensive way to go, but it is great if you need to interface with billion dollar studios on a regular basis. I'm a Cubase guy myself.

If you are considering the jump to computer recording, I'd check out the home recording soundcard wizard in my signature.
