Default My Setup - What to do

Right now i have 3 desktops and a laptop i use for editing movies and recently audio. I have a Mackie DX6 mixer, headphone amp, Shure SM58, and mic boom and I've done recording for a very small band demo track using the 1/8" on my laptop. I was wondering what interface would be good to buy considering my budget for one would be $100-$200. Also what other units should i buy such as EQ, Noise Gate, Pre-amp.

Thanks

What's your total budget? You mention $100-$200 for the card, but then talk about EQ's and gates.... since you don't need eq's or gates, and the pre-amps will be in your audio interface, lump everythign together. What software are you recording with? How many channels do you need to record simultaneously? What is the purpose of the final output?

Well the budget for a EQ or Noise Gate would be like $100-200 once again. I don't want to over spend to much. Actually as many simultaneous channels as i can get would be awesome; i was planning on only 1 because i thought more than 1 would cost mega money. I have $1000 saved for software and i was looking at Reason 4, Sony Acid, Fruity Loops, or Cubase. What would you recommend? I'm recording for local bands and artists, I also plan to use it for making movies if possible so anything portable would be great, no big deal if its the size of a car though.

I've considered this unit before but i never understood what makes it so good. Can anyone explain why its better than a Lexicon Alpha or unit close to that?

Its in your budget.
PT is an industry standard.
All your software plugs are included. eq, compression, gate...etc.
Its mobile.
It'll go into your laptop or where-ever.
The Preamps are aight.
You get dos pre ampos'
It'll get ya goin...

There are BILLION other options tho...Im just a PT fan. It wont hurt my feelings if ya dont agree.

This is a case where us Cubase Jews finally get our revenge on the Pro Tools Nazis!!! ha ha hahah aha

However, there will be no ovens in this case. Pro Tools is a solid tool, but it would need to improve, cost less, and Digidesign would have to be less brutal to it's customers before I switched.

Let's discuss this one. Pro Tools is not the master race.

Pro Tools HD ($10,000-20,000) is the most popular recording rig in major studios. I think the #1 reason it is the most popular is because it is the most popular. You can open a Pro Tools LE session easily in Pro Tools HD. That's the only advantage that Pro Tools has over everyone else. If you frequently track in other Pro Tools studios, this is a factor. Of course, if you want to open a Pro Tools session in Nuendo (which does happen from time to time) the OMF export feature in Pro Tools costs $500.

If you don't need to interface with other Pro Tools studios, there is no need to go with Pro Tools. If you do a lot of MIDI sequencing, there is reason NOT to go with Pro Tools.
