Default Monitors

Under $250. Brands.

Differences between high end models and low end. Difference between those that cost 2000 and those that cost a hundred.

I'm going to buy a pair tomorrow or the day after.

Studio monitors under $250 are going to be slim pickings. The cheapest monitors I've ever heard of anyone being happy with are these.

Generally speaking, the more you pay for studio monitors, the better they are going to be at sounding accurate, which allows you to make better decisions during tracking, mixing, and mastering. There is a point of diminishing return and taste certainly becomes an issue in there somewhere.

Doesn't matter... you won't get accurate monitors for $250 a pair. What's the difference between those that cost thousands, as opposed to those that cost a couple of hundred? Accuracy is likely to be the biggest factor. Can you hear the difference? I use nearfield monitors at various pricepoints from a few hundred dollars (Alesis M1 Mk2, KRK Rokit 6, M-Audio BX8A) to a grand (Tannoy Reveal Active) to three grand (Adam S2A). My observation, and its all subjective, is that out of all of these, only the Alesis monitors really suck. Some people actually like these, so I don't know whether we have a duff set, but they really sound very bad indeed. I wouldn't use them for anything other than rough edits. There is relatively marginal difference between all of the other monitors, although they do exhibit their own characteristics, leading me to believe that only a maximum of one pair is actually accurate, and they might not be. There is absolutely no doubt that the Adams sound the best (though a little shallow in the low end on their own). The KRK's are great value with a decent low end, the Tannoy's relatively close to the Adam's in terms of accuracy, and the M-Audio's, the best I could afford for home, are surprisingly good for their price.

Hey I would highly recommend a pair of these. They are $350 but I love'em and they have been getting great reviews.

Check'em out. Buy Blue Sky EXO Studio Monitoring System online at Musician's Friend

Hope you consider these. They are definitely worth their price.

Accuracy is there and they don't color the sound. The only downside is they don't get incredibly loud. But then again mixing and editing doesn't require a lot of dbs.

That's not to say they can't get loud, because they can. These guys can definitely make your room rumble.... just not at a deafening level.

I'll look into the latter

Otherwise, I've already looked around for Maudio monitors.

I'm going to head into the City to see if there are any available in the high street shops. They're usually expensive, though. I like to know where I purchase my goods so I can grab them by the neck if they fall short of their agreement.

I wonder if there any that can simultaneously connect to my PC and direct box like the blue sky exo suggests.

Yes they can! I have my pc hooked up to the monitors as well as my Alesis Multimix 16 firewire interface. Not only that but you can also plug in an mp3 player too! If for some reason you wanted to play 3 audio sources simultaneously, now you can!

I'm going to make my audio play back device my focusrite saffire, making simultaneous play back solving the wiring problem.

Is there a problem with that? Processing power?

I'm probably buying the maudio if i find a suitable place to purchase it from.
