Lightbulb mmm..sounds like crap

So, I wanna know how to make my cubase sound better..
When I recorded stuff and then exported to an MP3 file and the played it, it sounds like crap. Its muffled and stuff. it sounds terrible. I mean, the whole point for buying this stuff was to try to record something that sounds halfway decent. is my sound card bad? did i do something wrong?
any suggestions?
maggie

Who knows? What does it sound like in Cubase? What does it sound like if you export as a WAV rather than an MP3? What MP3 settings are you using?

There are so many variables here.

Cubase sounds just as good as anything. When I had my last album mastered, the big dog mastering engineer said that stuff done in Steinberg tends to be better. While I don't think that Cubase is any better sounding than anything else out there it just shows that Cubase people are smarter.

There are 10 billion factors, here. You've bought tools, nothing more. I could go buy a saw and a hammer, but it won't magically fix my house. The same applies to audio. The big boys you hear on major label records have dedicated their life to the craft of music recording

Are you rendering your songs to 256 Mps or something else?

If your tracks sound bad, is it because of your recording ability or because of something is wrong? Do the tracks sound dull when you record them?

Do the tracks sound different rendered vs pre-rendered?

Brandon

Helpfull would be information of your setup, what you do to record, fx used and best of all, a link to a track with which you're not happy, including what you don't like.

Helping out with the (lack of) information you provided is impossible, as you can see from the previous posts...

Peace, Haven

I use cubase sx3/ 4 and im convinced that mixes sound different when exported. I now sometimes use voxengos free 'Tape' it to live record the final mix. No question, this sounds a lot better.(honestly)Dont no why though

I had the same mp3 export issue! I set all the options for top quality etc, exported, but it sounded terrible. No idea why. Now i only bounce down to Wav from cubase using 32bit, 44khz(my project settings)--(Unless i use a dither in the master channels prefader, in which case i export to 16bit, 44 khz)

BTW, what soundcard do u have?
