Default mixing tutorials and more

Hi ppl,

so i am not so experienced in home recording. Is there a mixing tutorial somwhere?. I am keep asking myself how can a recording sound so good, with all the instruments so separate from each other, and mine so draft. Even if the traks are good quality recorded my final mix sucks. I am also shure it's because of the mixing. All the instruments sounds are mixed everywhere. Let's take for example one song: Under a glass of moon from Dream Theater: the rithm guitar is stereo enhanced(left/right). The base is somwhere above midle and the drums in the middle. Every instrument has an exact position and i can here separattely.
Another question is about the effects that i should use on the recorded traks:
- What efects for guitar? what for base? and what for drums? The big big question is about handling the compressor and where it does imply?
A..and i forgot ..which is the difference between the mixing and the mastering?
what is mastering doing above the mixing?

thanks

I have a number of products on the drawing board. I'm working hard on my home recording book which explains quite a bit of the concepts of mixing in depth.

The best advice I can give you is to post a song in Recording Reviews and let us tear it apart. This is the best way to learn.

Of course, I have quite a few articles on mixing:
