Post Mixer monitoring, probably easy to answer!

Hello, I recently bought a Peavy PV(R) 10 mixer.

This mixer uses a usb chord.

This is my first mixer, I've always recorded through the microphone input of my sound card up until now (horrible, I know). I'm having trouble though. For example:

Say I was recording a song, I've just recorded the guitar track and am ready to record the bass track. Problem is that when the mixer is turned on no sound will come out of the computer speakers, I have to use the mixer outputs. But how can I record the guitar in sync with the bass then, if I can't hear it? So my question really is, is there a way I can monitor the sound and hear my computer at the same time?

I assumed there is an easy answer to this question, but I have yet to find it. I've done some googling, and read my mixers manual. I am absolutely clueless. If anyone knows the answer I'd love to hear it, thanks!

What software are you using?

Seems to me like you need to set up the output of your software to go into your mixer. Then you should be able to use the mixer's outputs to monitor all the time instead of your computer's soundcard.

I could be wrong though. I quit being a computer genius when Star Fleet hired Romulans and Klingons to do their programming.

That is how an audio interface works, it provides high quality inputs and outputs to 'interface' recording equipment with the computer.

Connect headphones or studio monitor speakers to the mixer to hear.

A USB connection provides stereo in and out to and from the computer.

Try going to your recording software and set it up so the audio inputs and outputs are all your mixer. Then you should be able to hear both yourself playing and previously recorded tracks at the same time, through the same audio outputs, through the same speakers.

Your software might already be set up for it so the first thing I would try is just connect the speakers to the audio output. If it doesn't work then you probably have to change your output settings to the mixer outputs.
