Default M-Box 2

Hi there - great website you have here - or at least the discussions are great. I have just released a CD which was done at an outside studio with PC tools - and I have a couple of additional tracks recorded I'd like to incorporate into my next one - which I want to record myself. I do guitar, harp and vocals so was looking at the MBox 2 as an easy way for me to get started - plug into my PC or buy a Mac and get a couple of decent mics (I have a Sure 57) ...Am I just wasting my money or what. I have about 40 songs I need to record this year...so a smaller interface sound unit with a USB connect seemed the way to go. Tell me I am foolish.

Okay. You are foolish.

The M-Box 2 is a qualty product. However, there are many other quality products out there too.

Personally, I'm not enamered by the Pro Tools company. I've been 100% satisfied with Cubase and other hardware.

I have no doubt that you can get just as good of product for les money by going with something other than Pro Tools.

Check out my Home Recording Soundcard Wizard in my signature. It'll get you started and show you what is really out there, what's best for your needs, etc.

The money you can save by avoiding the Pro Tools money trap can be spent on a better mic collection or pizza!

ProTools/Mbox wouldn't be on my list.

Well, what about the ability to use pro tools creates wav files with cubase or some other software??? Will I be able to do that?? And should I really need a firewire connection or is that just for the pros???

If the studio doesn't have the OMF option, then you can get them to give you consolidated wavs. For the latter, you'll have to mix from scratch in Cubase, but it's easily possible. If they have the OMF option, you should be able to import everything into Cubase.

OMF option in Cubase = free
OMF option in ProTools = $500.

A good reason not to get protools. They gouge you for everything.

I'm not sure this statement came out the way you intended. Could you rephrase it?

Sorry,

You are right - that was terrible - the question was about the fact that I have files in Pro Tools already - how would I get them converted to Cubase or some other program???

The MBox factory comes with a number of plug ins (frequency peak limiters, etc.)- are these any good - or just teasers?? do you know that???

The little bit I've played with Pro Tools, the plugins didn't strike me as being any better or worse than any other stock plugins.

I certainly wouldn't ever make my decision on going with a specific program based on the quality of the stock plugins because that is an easy problem to solve.

One way is to export consolidated wav files from Pro Tools. I've got a feeling that this is one options that costs hundreds of dollars, though. Richiebee would be better at this question.
