m-audio fast track pro inst/line button

I've just bought an m-audio fast track pro and can't hear a difference in the signal level when I change the input from 'line' to 'inst'. I have a guitar plugged in with a normal jack to jack guitar lead. Should I be able to? I thought this would just change the gain on the input, so the sound would be quieter if the switch was in the 'line' position.

Well, that depends on what the buttons are supposed to do.

The conventional thinking goes like this. "Line" would bypass the preamp, while "Mic" would use the preamp while "Instrument" would use the preamp but use Hi-Z inputs (assuming this audio inteface has Hi-Z inputs).

You never really know what they are thinking with these labels, though.
