Default M-Audio Driver Issues w/Windows XP Svc P.2

I'm using an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra audio interface on a Windows XP platform, and each time either the computer or the interface is powered off, the computer loses the driver and I have to re-install it.

I'm presently going back and forth with M-Audio techs trying to figure out the problem. I've installed this interface on 3 different computers, and had the same problem on all of them.

M-Audio wants me to mail the Fast Track Ultra back to them for "testing/repair/replacement." Looks like I'll be without it for around 6 weeks, by the time they receive it, do whatever to it, and mail it back. At which time I'll have to reinstall the thing over again, using the same old driver I downloaded from their website to start with. I just don't believe this is going to fix anything.

Has anyone else had any experience with FTU and Windows XP (Service Pack 2)? I'm not the smartest person in the world when it comes to computers, but it seems odd they'd want to fix a software problem by repairing the hardware...not to mention the time I'll be without a way to record. Just not sure if I should just keep the thing powered on all the time and reinstall whenever there's a power surge, or if this can really be fixed.

Several years ago my Lexicon Omega had an issue where it would lose its USB connection and would require a driver reinstall to get going again. It turned out to be a ribbon cable sitting on a hot FET causing an intermittent connection.

So, the fact that a driver reinstall fixes the problem doesn't necesarily mean it's not a hardware issue. Do your drivers actually disappear? More likely they are just not recognizing the hardware from the previous install and require a new install procedure to linkup again.

If your unit is under warranty I would definitely take advantage of the offered repair. It's possible they know EXACTLY what the problem is, even if they don't tell you. Having a reliable audio interface that does exactly what you want makes all the difference. If it takes six weeks it's probably worth it.

M-Audio seems to be a good lot to get service from. They've worked with me on this since I posted, and have agreed to test a new unit and send it to replace the one I have. That way, if it has the same driver issues, then I know it's something on my computer. They've made arrangements so I won't have to be without an interface other than the time it will take to install the new one.

Thanks for the advice. I learn something new every day about this stuff, and this forum has been a great resource.

Are you sure the problem is a software problem?

I wouldn't. There is obviously a problem that needs to be worked out.

Are these USB drivers? Why don't you try installing SP3?

Be careful with SP3. I heard about 20 people complaining that all USB ports died on them, but the new SP3 fix is supposed to take care of it.
