I always recommend a real deal audio interface for home recording. Try using the Home Recording Soundcard Wizard in my signature. That'll get you started.

It depends. Some factory sound cards do not have a way of turning this off. Some have a control panel thingy that should do it. (I'm not sure this going to help you though).

You may get lucky with that part of the problem, but latency is still going to be an issue. I think latency is causing the problem now.

Hey
So two things i've thought when i saw ur post, first, since its not a new portable, the soundcard might be kinda old (usually portable technology is a lil behind the normal pc technology).

Plus I've never seen somone record on a pc. Only macs are good for that.
The pc just have the cheapest soundcards. So you could always follow brandon's idea and buy a better soundcard. But if I were you (this is personnal, its your money) I wouldnt since the computer isnt new. Just use ur normal computer , if u have one of course...

what about if i bought a Lexicon Alpha sound card recording thingy?

would that work then?
on the laptop?
its not a really old one and it's full of memory
and fast!

is the Lexicon Alpha an ok sound card to record on?

what are your thoughts on it?

or can you recommend another sound card in that price range that is better?
cos im on a tight budget!!!

Captain

P.S

would a 'Line 6 Toneport UX1 USB Guitar Interface' do the same thing?
cos i ain't sure what this is but it looks good

or a Line 6 TonePort UX2 recording Interface?

thank you

Yup, or you pay way more to get it the current stuff. Of course, it doesn't matter how new the soundcard is. If it wasn't designed with low latency in mind, you will always have problems. There is no need for Dell or Audigy to spend the extra cash for low latency soundcards for people playing games or listening to Mp3s. The average user has no need for 1/4" or XLR inputs, mic preamps, S/PDIF inputs, fancy monitoring options, etc.

Hang on one second, shylessness4924 . You had better have some substantial evidence (that I've never seen in 6 years of recording to back up your claim that "Only Macs are good for home recording").

The #1 reason I started this forum was to weed out the bullshit. I was sick and tired of people giving bad advice. I'm self taught and have tried just about every piece of advice out there. Some of these "urban myths" are just plum ridiculous to a person with any knowledge or experience, but are a total distraction to the serious musician trying to learn.

As a person who is new to the game, what makes you think you can come on this forum and post flat out lies when you obviously don't know? Are you trying to go out of your way to confuse beginners? Why?

Your "Mac only" theory is bullshit. While there is always debate about which format to use, that's just it. It's a heated debate because both sides have compelling arguments. In the end, it comes down to the operating system (especially now that Mac as using Intel chips just like many PCs). Most recording tasks are easily handled by any modern PC or Mac. It comes down to the musician.

I don't mean to come up like an asshole. I've answered 1,000s of newbies questions in the year and half I've had this forum. However, I get upset when someone goes out of their way to type a message could seriously confuse a beginner.

The Lexicon Alpha is a fine audio interface.

Is it the right audio interface for you? That's an interesting question. I built the Home Recording Soundcard Wizard (see my signature) to help you answer that.

I recommend using my Soundcard Wizard and see if the Line6 comes up. If it meets your needs, consider using it. If it doesn't meet your needs, don't use it.

The most important part of choosing an audio interface / sound card is understand what YOU need. What you need is different from what I need! The Soundcard Wizard will help with this.
