    Default interface question

I have a cheap behringer usb unit with 2 rca in's and 2 rca out's.

I want to play midi sounds live and record them at the same time. Example: Kontact drums into audacity.
It will not work with the little behringer, but it will work if I unplug the behringer. The computer likes listening to itself, but not the cheap interface!

Would a more expensive interface allow me to play midi and record it as audio or should I continue to unplug the usb every time I want to record?

Likely, it has nothing to do with recording, but with how the audio signal is routed for audio output in the vst/i and in Audacity

What's the source of your recording?

A mic? Just the output of your interface?

If you don't have any mic to record, just record the midi that you use to generate the audio.

You can convert it to audio later.

You should be able to record the output of the interface by plugging the output into the input.

Make sure you're not monitoring the input or you get feedback.

That's what you have to do if you have an interface without a loopback feature.

You can also use two programs running separately.

I do that with live karaoke on my system, play in cubase, record in sound forge.

Cubase sends the signals out the interface then SF record the input.

Exactly! I have a free vst player that I play which gives an audio out. So when I hit a key, I get like a bass drum or whatever. I want to record that very sound on acid--the other program I have open. i can't do it when the usb is plugged in.
That's why I'm thinking the usb interface is the issue, because the setup without the interface works.
In your situation, it would be like playing cubase, but soundforge not picking up anything...until you unplug your interface.
    thanks.

I think some old soundcards have a problem recording and playing back. Can you record from your pc Mic input while playing back the drum samples?

Another issue is make sure the device drivers for the use device are ok in device manager.. And that its plugged in 'before' opening your recording software.

If these are not where the problem lies you could try testing by this simple sequencing and vs hosting software:
    zynewave.com

The DL is tiny and free (version 2.4) on Download page.

I haven't used it.. But it may help you troubleshoot whether this is a use driver conflict, soundcard issue, software issue etc.
