Question Home Recording s/w?

Hi (especially to the admin)

Ill be to- the- point:

What m i looking for?
-A simple (free or strictly under $50)Home recording software.

What type of recording?
-I play guitar.Looking for a s/w to record my compositions.

What particularly i want?
-Layers of recordings,i.e i want to record by combining 2,3 layers of guitar work.First i want to record something, then want to add another recording to it(its like recording when 2-3 guys are playing together),that should be very clear.
-If possible, addition of some drum beats .
-Effects(i.e clean acoustic,distortion )
-No or very less noise.
-synchronization,i.e, if i my first recording starts at 00.00 sec and the other starts at 03.00 sec then i should be able to cut one of the recordings at the right place to make different pieces sound in synchronization.
-Mixing,Editing

What i have right now?
-Win2kPro
-No sound card
-256 MB RAM
-P-III,667 Mhz

Current Status
-I record, as of now, through the headphone's mic .
-A lot of noise creeps in every time i record.

Please help me!!

Free Music Recording Software

All of these should be able to pull this off.

Okay, besides the software, what other questions did you have?

A few of us on here have "big" home recording rigs....whatever that means, but a large majority are using very simple setups. Actually, now that I've been producing a lot more, my rig has become quite simple as well.

Your needs seam to be typical of what most home recording people are looking for.

Free Music Recording Software

I think this is the one he was referring to. The other link pointed to the whole 'getting started' forum. The one mentioned here is the thread for free-software.

At any rate, I've been trying reaper, and think it's pretty darn nice. Does what you want, no tonnes of overhead (unneeded) for 40$ personal use. Plus, it's full software, like shareware, so you can test all functions, then cough up the coin when you're content.
