Default HD Recorder Questions?

I'm considering getting either :

1. Yamaha aw1600 -

2. Korg D3200 -

3. AKADPS24MKII -

The Korg and Yamaha are over $1k cheaper than the Akai.

Anyway, i read your 2005 article abt why the computer is the way to go for recording vs the HD ADA recorders.

That was then..How do you feel about that now?

Also, I do plan to do the computer route but want to get something i can immediately start creating with. recording and then overdubbing with it in a easy user interface..

Any other suggestions for that type of gear. 8+inputs ok. Do want quality that can be ported to the Computer DAW later.

Whatcha think Brandon,

Default Re: HD Recorder Questions?

To be honest, I haven't toyed with the stand alone units in a while, but I couldn't imagine that they've overcame the flaws that bother me.

#1 I hate the user intefaces. I don't like a little bitty screen. I don't like having to scroll through all kinds of menus. It's just counter intuitive to me to use these. I find that recording software (like Cubase) takes a little getting use to, but is a lot closer to the real thing.

#2 I hate the lack of plugin choice. I don't want to be stuck with crappy reverbs or compressors. I have almost unlimited options in the computer.

#3 Automation is usually a pain or even impossible with many of the stand alone rigs. I must have automation for the way I work. Some people many not need it as much, but I do. It's an issue of how you are used to working I guess.

These are just a few reasons that I would go the computer route.

One thing has changed in the past year is computers have increased drastically in the (speed / $$ ratio). This means you have much more processing power than you did a year ago for the same amount of bills.
