Basically, there are a few options. #1) Analog mixing. This is the old school method of running each individual track to a channel an output in your audio interface, sending that to a mixer, and then adding compression, EQ, etc in the analog domain. #2) In the box mixing. With in the box mixing you won't use any hardware. It'll all be within the computer. #3) A hybrid of the 2. Some recording software allows you to route an "external effect" by sending the signal from the track to a designated output, run through a compressor or whatever, and then run it back into that channel. I know Cubase SX3 does this, but I'm not sure about any others. You'd have to check your software.
