Does soundcard matter when using the Tascam US-144 Audio Interface?

I'm just starting to piece together a small home studio and have a question. I picked up a Tascam US-144 Audio Interface and will be using an old laptop.

If I'm running everything (in/out) through the Tascam does it matter what type or quality of sound card this old laptop has?

Or, do I need to invest in an updated sound card? My understanding is that the sound card is irrelevant with the audio interface unit acting as the sound card. I could be wrong.

Any advice - tips?
