Default DIY Quiet Running Computers

Hi Guys and Ladies,

This inquiry concerns quiet running computers :

I have read the diy computer info on this forum by searches and articles, as well as other internet searches. I understand that one should get the lowest db ( quietest available components available, especially fans ) that one can afford. But, there is one thing that I can not find addresed here regarding quietening of computers. It seems that some builders of music recording computers use Auralex Sheet Block 1/8" thick. It is claimed that this helps with computer generated noise reduction of general internal noise computer case vibrations. Since I've not seen it mentioned on this forum, I wonder if the Auralex treatment is marketing hype type bullshit or would it be worth the time and added expense to apply to the inside of a new aluminun case before a new build is started ??? Any enlightenment on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a bunch gang,
Jim

This is the same as the stuff they use in car audio called "Dynamat".

It's a very simple theory. By adding mass to something, it takes more energy for it to vibrate. It can reduce noise, but only to a certain point.

Some cheap computer cases will resonate with the noise of the fan and kind of act like a "passive radiator". (Touch your guitar headstock to window while strumming and listen to what happens. The window becomes a speaker...more or less).

By adding mass to certain parts of the computer case, you can reduce this. It'll make a difference.

However, it will never stop the sound of the fans themselves. This only makes the case heavier and keeps down certain vibrations.

Is it worth it? It depends on your situation. It couldn't hurt!
