I still haven't learned how to use it well without totally raping the top end on vocals, anybody have any tips?

I've tried... without any success whatsoever.

I'm unlikely to try again unless someone shows me the secret.

I use it all the time in all sorts of cases and I don't always use it at 5k (which is USUALLY the place to start with vocals). I sometimes use it on all sorts of frequencies.

The problem with de-essing is that it's not nearly as easy to hear as EQ is because it doesn't kick in all the time.
