Angry crackles and pops

So I've dove into the whole recording thing and got myself a nice mic and e-mu usb 2.0 interface. I'm getting some kind of digital distortion on playback (crackles and pops), levels are ok, to the best of my knowledge (the level on the interface and screen read with no clipping). Does anyone know what might be the problem. Is this a Media Center thing? As that is unfortunately my OS currently.
