Default CPU Upgade

HI,
I have a PC with windows XP, I use LIVE 7 and P4 processor 2.8GHz.
I wasn't quite happy with performance of CPU so I found a new 3.8GHz CPU
compatible with my MOBO, P5LD2-VM. Installation went OK, it was recognized in BIOS as a new processor, etc, no problem.
Now WHY I don't notice any real improvement!?!?
When I click on the SYSTEM icon, it says P4 3.80GHz 2.40Ghz...
Why the 2.40GHz?
I ran a test for LIVE6,7 and my performance improved by 5% maybe...
It is really nothing if you consider going from 2.8 to 3.8Ghz...
Any ideas?
TIA

what recording really needs is more ram - obviously the processor is important, but past about 2.5GHz, it kinda becomes morea bout running the lates games, as opposed to making your audio work better.

consider looking into more/faster ram, or a faster hard drive. How full is your hard drive? how many programs do you have running within windows?

I have 3Giga of RAM, I don't run any games, discs turn at 7500tpm and are half full.
I don't run any antivirus progs, and in windows task manager there are 30
processes going...
I only have midi-ox, and tha's it.
By the way I fixed the problem with the cpu running slow, it was due to a locked multiplier...
But you are wright, there isn't much dif. in running, now it doesn't choke on some of reaktor 5 units...
Cheers K.

That must be nice. I'm still slugging it out with my Athlon 64 2800.

Those are just numbers. There are a billion other factors. I'd probably expect 10-20% more performance though. It depends on the kind of performance you are talking about. It also depends on the load on the computer from the start. For example. Let's just say you have a machine covered in crap from the internet, lots of useless software, etc. You could expect the new processor to run about the same as before. The fact that you more horsepower than I do and aren't happy with the performance when I expect your needs to be less than mine (I could be wrong) suggest that your computer isn't clean.

The other problem here is you are focusing on one link of the chain. When I upgrade, I always go with a new motherboard, processor, and RAM. Of course, I never upgrade within the same generation. I've read that processors in a family are all actually the same, but the higher quality processors are rated to handle a higher heat load so they give them the higher Ghz rating. I'm not sure if it's true. It wouldnt' surprise me.

That is interesting... I wouldn't mind a little clean up, I just don't know where to start, in the manager there are 30 or so processes running, but I have no Idea what can be turned off, I allready run minimum in msconfig....

I compare this to my old athlon 64 3000+ with a creative audigy EX sound card.
I could run 2-3 softsynths standalones from NI's Electronic instruments 2XT
and it (PC) would not crap out on me. Now I can run only one with this one.
I have m-audio firewire solo sound card.
However I don't know if it wasn't also that audigy EX had multiple outs or was it the CPU...?
Cheers

I INSIST that my recording computer have no internet or anything that isn't specifically designed for recording. I have Cubase, synths, samples, plugins, and cd burning software. That is it.

If I couldn't have a dedicated machine, I'd go with a dual boot system so that I could restart my computer with a different operating system installation and fire up the super clean recording rig or my work/internet computer.
