Default copyright permissions?

Hey e'budy.
I would like to record my voice to karaoke and other background music that probably requires permission ie royalties and send the completed songs to friends and relatives via e-mail mp3's.
Doe's anyone here have that kind of info or perhaps links or sites that I could
go for that knowledge?
I checked google, and a few other places but was a bit overwhelmed by
the volume of info.
I want to pay somebody for their work so I'm not worried about the money issue.
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!
stigg.

You should have been. You are asking about lawyer stuff!

If you aren't making a dime off the recording, I wouldn't worry about it. People do cover songs all the time. When you start making cash is when you start paying attention to this sort of thing.

Thanks Brandon, I thought that might be the case but if I find to the contrary
I'll let you know.

Brandon is right - if you aren't selling the music, don't worry about it. When you buy a karaoke cd, you are buying the right to sing over it and if you want to record it and share it with friends, I wouldn't look for the FBI to come knocking. Relax and enjoy.
