Probably a really old computer running an old OS. Cool Edit became Adobe Audition years ago.

You need to be more specific about what you intend to record, how you intend to record it, etc.

The oversimplified run down is something like this.

Mic Stand
Microphone
Mic cable
Preamp
Soundcard (many include the preamp)
Computer w/ CD burner
Software
Studio Monitors / Speakers
Headphones
Headphone extension cable

That should get you started. If you have any specific questions, just ask.

If you don't know what soundcard you have, it's probably not going to be ideal for recording. Most integrated or stock PCI soundcards have big problems with latency.

I always recommend getting a Shure SM 57 first and probably a KEL HM-1 condenser second. After that, I'd probably snag one of the MXL mics.

You won't want to use the stock soundcard that comes in your computer. You'll want to get a soundcard dedicated to recording, or get an interface which is an object that you plug your shit into and basically has a built-in sound card

A cheap but great mic is a Shure SM57 $90

Brandon, you should create a sticky or something of "suggested setups" for different recording rigs
