Default Connecting PreAmp to an Interface... Is This Correct?

Connecting PreAmp to an Interface... Is This Correct?

Hello There,

This is my first post here in the forums and Im very thankful that I found this forum since I really wanted to start on home recording for so long.

I have a question about the connections. I really am sorry i think this is a stupid question but I just wanted to make sure...

Im planning to get the basic equipment for recording.

Shure SM57
Presonous Blue Tube Preamp
M Audio Fast Track USB Computer Recording Interface

I already have a mac and of course my basic live gear(guitars/amps/effects pedals)

I wanted to ask a question about the connections.
This is how I plan to connect the recording equipment. Please tell me better connections or if I'm doing something wrong:

As For Recording: Guitar > Effects > Amp -> (Im going to mic the amp) ShureSM57 -> Presonous Blue Tube Pre Amp -> USB Computer Recording Interface -> (USB of Interface) Computer.

As for Monitoring Sound: I plan to hook up the Stereo Output Jacks of the interface to the Preamp and monitor my sound from the preamp by hooking up stereo monitors from the pre amp.

Please help me with this. Am I doing the right connections?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thank You Very Much

I'm not quite sure why you would want to run your monitors through the preamp, I would just plug the monitors into the outputs on the Interface.

I'm not sure either. In recording land, a "preamp" is a device that boosts the signal of a microphone up to line level. The outputs of your audio interface are already line level.

Is the pre-amp (mentioned in your quote above) referring to the Presonus Tube Preamp?

If so, then no don't hook it up that way. Like Brandon mentioned, it should be used with your microphone.

If what you meant by "preamp" in your quote above, was actually a separate power amp that you have (used to power speakers) then yes, this is the way to connect things up (GIVEN THAT YOUR MONITORS ARE PASSIVE).

Are your monitors active (self-powered) or passive (not self-powered )?

If they are ACTIVE monitors then you don't need an amplifier between the INTERFACE OUTPUTS and MONITORS. Just connect directly.

Yup I actually bought the Presonus TubePre preamp. And I also have the Alpha Lexicon interface. So If I get the Active Monitors ill just hook it up in the line outputs of the Alpha Lexicon interface?

Yes correct.

Input Chain:
mic --> Presonus TubePre --> Alpha Lexicon Input

Monitoring Chain (if using ACTIVE Monitors):
Alpha Lexicon Outputs --> Active Monitors

Monitoring Chain (if using PASSIVE Monitors):
Alpha Lexicon Outputs --> Power Amp --> Passive Monitors
