are you able to record ANY external audio? or is it just the guitars that are causing you problems? when you record "drum and other samples" are they external to your PC or are they being generated inside SX using plugins?

if you can't get SX to record ANY external audio, you are having problems probably with the "VST Connections", and then maybe how you are enabling your tracks. if that is so, you should run to Guitar Center, and buy a book called "Cubase Ignite" or "Cubase Power" and read up. that'll explain all of cubase's complicated routing concepts. good luck

You need to make sure you have the inputs actived in Cubase. In SX3, you can press F4 to bring up this menu. It sounds like your outputs are set correctly, but maybe your inputs aren't working.

i'm not sitting in front of my PC, but the steps in order are....
  1. enable your INPUTS on the VST CONNECTIONS menu.
  2. assign that specific input to the track you want to record on. you do that on the specific track either in the mixer window or on the left side of the main tracking window.
  3. arm the specific track for recording. don't forget this part
  4. hit record

that book will have a million screenshots explaining all that.
