Hi there

Sorry for the PM but I registered on this site to get some advice and I am unable to post.... looking to buy a cheap condenser mic for my home studio.....a behringer c1 has been suggested but I don't have a preamp for phantom power....I just plug directly into my m audio soundcard....will it still work?

thanks for any advice

Pete.

Just to help you out with the forum lingo, you replied to a thread. You never sent me a PM, but maybe you sent it to someone else. You replied in a thread that really wasn't geared to your question, so I created a new thread for you to ensure your question gets the attention it deserves.

What M Audio Soundcard do you have?

A condenser requires phantom power. Bottom line.

If you don't want to buy an external preamp with phantom power, just use a dynamic microphone.

Thanks for the advice and sorting out my post Brandon

I use an Audiophile 2496 soundcard...Up until now I have been using a dynamic mic with cubase SX but I have to duplicate tracks 7 or 8 times to get a decent signal level.

Which preamp would you recommend?

Pete.

You definitely need a preamp. That's your problem.

It depends on your budget. You could go with something like the M-Audio Audio Buddy pretty inexpensively. Presonus has some fine preamps that are fairly inexpensive as well. I wouldn't overthink this. Some guys will spend a month researching budget preamps. There is no need. Just get something pretty good and go for it. I dont' hear a massive difference between stock Mackie preamps and my $1000 preamps.

Thanks for all your help Brandon...I think I will go with the Art Tube valve.
